Developing railway hub for fossil free future of transport

The Region Örebro County is located in the demographic centre of Sweden and functions as transportation hub between north-south and east-west directions. Highways E18, E20 and highway 50 all converge in the region, as well as several of Sweden’s busiest railway lines. The largest marshalling yard in Scandinavia, Hallsberg marshalling yard, is located here.

The Region Örebro County coordinates and leads regional growth and development within a range of areas, such as: energy and climate, business development, traffic and urban planning, welfare and public health, education etc.

The Region Örebro County’s vision for climate and energy is to create a society free of greenhouse and gas emissions. The aim is to save energy by implementing renewable resources and sustainable forms of transportation, and increase efficiency in energy use and resource utilisation.

In order to create sustainable means of transportation, the utilisation and development of the railway is an important factor. Together with partners in the project, an investigation regarding a potential modal shift along the Scandria corridor will be performed. Each partner will focus on the flows to/from the area in which they are located or active in. The information gathered will then be shared among the partners so that they will be able to benefit from each other’s information. This collaboration is unique and essential in order to achieve in-depth analysis and to foster a modal shift.
